So two days ago I was struggling with one of the issues that so many of us have ... a long line at Starbucks. Before that, it was traffic and the delays in getting home to my big, luxurious loft condo. As a coach, I often listen to people complain about things that are bothering them that in other parts of the world would be trivial or a pleasure to have to deal with. For example, a client who was concerned about not being able to go on the supplier trip to Hawaii this year. As well, my friend that was buying the big screen TV and how ridiculous the delivery fee was. Are these things really the biggest issues?!
My idea or revelation is that I am in the top 1% of the world's population in terms of stuff, materials, luxuries, travel and cash. When I start to think about the "suffering" being waged against me, I have to find perspective. The flash thought of "1%" gives the immediate reset to say, okay so traffic is a little heavy today ... and I'm sitting in a Porsche!!!
In business, your job or your finances, try to find perspective. You are one of the luckiest people on the planet. You have more on a bad day that most in their dreams. The dinner you throw out is something the proverbial "kids in Africa" would love to have. Your job is one that millions of people would like to have ... millions! Some of them are in your city right now. The fact that we can read and write and have a computer to surf the web is still novel in most countries.
Next time you are standing in line to spend your $4 on a coffee, remember the 1%.
