The Difference between You and Famous People

Did I get you with the headline?! Well, I have met some famous people and I can tell you, the difference between most famous people and you is very little. My suggestion to you is that it comes down to two things; vision and determination.

Each of us has the ability to dream about what our careers, relationships and even golf scores could be. What picture are you creating each day? Most of us have pictures that are only slightly bigger and better than our life today. If you can't dream it then it can't happen for you.

Secondly, I have found that most of us have an incorrect definition of failure. Most people quit and then call it failure. Most people try once, give up and then say it wasn't in the cards for them. Anthony Hopkins was 51 when he got his big break in his career. He had been acting for decades before then. Decades of work demonstrated his determination. So how determined are you?

You want to think bigger about your life and get better results? Here's how:

1. Start with your list of dreams ... now take away all the limitations you have today. Forget about the how and just focus on what you would really, really want in your dream life. Sometimes it helps to start with the question, if you had all the money and time in the world, what would you want to do? Forget about what you think the limits are and start with the ideal.

2. Pick the smallest dream or goal on your list. Now take that goal and break it down into little steps. For example, you want to run a 10K. Start with: what you would need to buy (shoes, a raincoat), signing up for a running club, think of two times a week when you could run in your schedule, etc. When you break down the goals into little steps, anything is possible and each step simple. No one "can't" do these little steps. They won't. The difference between a 10K and 26 miles of marathon is really more little steps (I can say that, I've done both).

3. You want more money. How much? How much more per day is that? So let's say its $100,000 more a year. That's $274 a day. So how could you generate that much more per day? Start a home based business, sell one more of your product a day, get a part-time job? Offer your unique skills on a Saturday workshop? Its all achievable but are you willing to put in the effort? When people break most monetary goals into daily or weekly amounts they find ways easier than focusing on the big number.

4. Share your list of goals with someone. Find someone who is supportive and can provide you with accountability. Go through your little steps with them. Using the running example, get them to make sure you shop for the gear and sign-up for the running club. If they can get you doing little steps then you move closer to the goals consistently. Create little successes.
Don't quit. Be like a little baby trying to walk, they try again and again without discouragement. This is the critical part of achieving a bigger life. Sometimes it comes quickly but most often it takes time. Just ask most "10 years of travelling in a van across the country to become instant rock stars" and they can tell you how persistence is key.

5. If you have an example of a goal you just can't see a path to, let me know and we can work out the steps with you! Email me at marty@martypark.com
